This unit had us watch the same teacher give two different lessons. The first one was very unsuccessful, while the second one was very successful. In the second one, the students were much more engaged, appeared to have a lot more fun, and clearly learned a lot more than they did in the first lesson. There were three main things that I took away from watching these videos in terms of why the second lesson was so much better/more effective than the first. The first was how important the attitude of the teacher is. In the first lesson the teacher seemed irritated and clearly didn’t want to be there. The students picked up on this, and no one enjoyed themselves. The second was how important clarity is. Teacher’s must be incredibly clear with instructions if they wish for their students to accurately complete the assigned task. One great thing the teacher did in the second lesson was go through an example of what the students would be doing on their worksheet so that they had a better understanding of what to do. Finally, I learned how elicitation techniques can take place during all aspects of the lesson, and how they are integral to drilling students on the language point of the lesson.
