Summary Chapter 18 – Modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice Modals include – may, might, need to, must, have to, have got to, should, can, could, be able to, would. There are two voices used in English; the active and the passive. In the passive – the object of the verb becomes the subject of the passive verb. The passive is used when we don’t know or don’t want to say who is doing the action. Students often make the error of leaving our the verb “to be.” There are three types of clauses - Independent clause - Dependent clause - Relative clause Phrasal verbs are verbs that have one or two words that make up the verb, eg turn-up. Introduce them gradually to students a couple at a time, keeping them within context so that students use them naturally. Don’t be afraid to use them.
