I learned that there are different ways to evaluate a student’s language level: tutorials, evaluation by the students, and tests. Placement tests are used to make sure students are grouped with others of an equal language level. Progress tests are a good way to see what language has been mastered and what language hasn’t been mastered or forgotten. It is a good way to see what language needs to be revisited. Diagnostic tests are usually given at the start of the course to see what the students already know. Practice tests follow the same layout as the external examination that they will be given and is useful to get them comfortable with the type and format of the questions they will get. The general external examinations include: TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, Cambridge Assessment, and Trinity College London. These examinations each have the goal to test English for different settings, such as business or studies. Some only focus on one English skill while others focus on testing integrated skills.
