After reading the material in Unit one, I believe that I have at least the book knowledge to analyze and diagnose a foreign language classroom. Before enrolling in this course, I have spent years living abroad in countries such as Japan, and speak fluently in other languages. Up until now, I have always been the learner, however reading the strategies provided in Unit one I believe I can become a gateway to another language like my teachers were for me. As a brief touch on Unit one, it explained the roles of a teacher, what describes a good teacher, as well as guidelines for language placement, and different criteria of students. Two sections I found extremely useful were, Teaching roles, and language placement. I was unaware of the different roles a teacher should take such as a “Prompter”, “Assessor”, or “Manager.” These all to me were normal behaviors that teachers had, which I never picked up on. I hadn’t realized the amount of finesse that goes in to be a “good teacher.” As for language placement, living abroad I’ve had the privilege to meet many people who speak English as a second language. Some have what I would’ve quoted as “fluency level skills” and others very “Grade school level”, now after being introduced to these guidelines I believe I will be better equipped to speak properly to the student. Meaning, If I can judge about what level they are in their English language learning, I can speak according to their language proficiency. All in all, Unit one was a great introduction to the world of English language teaching and I’m eager to learn more.
