This unit taught me a great deal in learning how to properly structure a lesson plan. One of my biggest worries going into teaching is figuring out ways to get serious English language concepts across to my students while also keeping them engaged throughout the entirety of a class. This unit discussed how the ESA guidelines produce a promising structure for a lesson plan as it has many different parts and allows for multiple different types of activities to be done throughout the class. One of the biggest take-a-ways I have from this unit is that although the ESA structure has three distinct portions, there is still room to vary the layout of a lesson as you can create patchwork and boomerang lessons that stray from the traditional straight-arrow technique. I plan on keeping the written aspect of this unit on my computer so that I can review it throughout the year and remind myself of the many possible activities for the engage, study, and activate portions of my lessons. One thing I will make sure to focus on in my lesson planning is to ensure that student speaking time is high while teacher speaking time remains relatively low throughout. While reading through this material, I couldn’t help but realize that it is incredibly important I know the native culture/language of my students so that my lesson plans can be applicable/relevant to them, and can also remain appropriate. It is helpful to have all these different activities in my arsenal, but the ones I choose to use will depend on how large my classroom is and what level of English acquisition my students are at. Finally, I learned a lot from the giving feedback section. I like the idea of having some portions of the class dedicated to instruction/correction, while other parts will focus solely on fluency and fostering confidence in my students so that they feel free to talk without interruption/correction. I knew this from my experiences as a student, but it is helpful to be reminded of how important it is to be positive with my students and to always give feedback in a positive light. In the end, it boils down to wanting students to enjoy learning English and to desire coming back to their English classrooms!
