This unit takes a close look at how to teach new language in terms of vocabulary, grammar and functions. To learn a new language, exposure to the language is not enough. We also need to focus our attention on its meaning, how its grammar and vocabulary are formed and used, and in using the language to interact.
This unit suggests several approaches to language teaching that are helpful to students by applying the ESA method. Lessons that are specifically targeted to grammar or vocabulary commonly use the ‘straight arrow’ ESA approach, whereas functions-based lessons commonly use the ‘boomerang’ or ‘patchwork’ ESA structure. It is important to mix techniques in a way which is coherent, so that all activities develop well out of one another and to help students learn best and explore with the new language.
