This unit focused on the productive language skills which are writing and speaking. There are many reasons people use these skills including to communicate an idea or because they want something to happen. It is important for the teacher to remember that it can be intimidating to speak in class, so being encouraging of speaking is essential. Writing in English can be made more complicated if the student's primary language does not use the same alphabet, is read in a different directions, or doesn't use the same punctuation. Being sensitive to this and anticipating struggles will be helpful when lesson planning. It can also help to allow students time to think about what they are going to say before starting a speaking activity. There is an important difference between accuracy and fluency, both skills should be addressed in lesson plans.
