There are four different present tenses. These tenses include the present simple, present continuous, present perfect, and the present perfect continuous tenses. The present simple tense is used to talk about routines, and habits. This includes things done on a daily basis. An example is: I eat oatmeal every day. It is important to note that in the third person singular, an -s or -es is added to the base form of the verb. For example: He works at a department store. While in the first person form, no -s or -es is required. For negative sentences in the present tense in the third person singular, -es is added to 'do' to make 'does.' An example is: "He does not go." In this example the -es is added to the auxiliary verb instead of the base form of the verb. The present continuous form is used to talk about things that are occurring during or around the time of speaking. This tense includes a subject plus an auxiliary verb plus -ing. For example: I am learning or he is watching TV. The present perfect tense is used for describing past actions with present results, or finished actions that occurred at an indefinite time. This form includes a subject plus the aux verb 'have' plus a past participle. For example: I have written a sentence. The present perfect continuous tense is used to relate past actions to the present. It includes a subject, the auxiliary verb 'have' plus been plus a verb that has -ing. For example: I have been living in Boston for 2 years.
