There are four basic skills in every language: reading, writing, speaking and listening. They can be divided into two groups. Reading and listening are known as receptive skills. Whereas, speaking and writing, productive skills. Productive and receptive skills are equally as important when learning and teaching a language. This lesson focused on teaching receptive skills.
Even though, there are many reasons for reading and writing they can summarized in two categories: purpose or entertainment. Different skills are used to able to do so, such as predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed reading and deduction. We don't just read with our eyes and listen with our ears, we employ our minds as well. Much of what we are able to understand comes from our pre-existing knowledge of the world.
