Synopsis of Unit 11; Teaching Receptive Skills. In this Unit, I understood and analyzed the different combinations deriving from;the four important language skills in every Language which are: Reading Listening Speaking Writing Each of these skills pair up with another, to form receptive and productive skills; Productive skills are: Speaking and Writing Receptive skills are: Reading and Listening All language skills are equally important. In this unit I learned the reasons why we use these skills, what are the methods used to distribute receptive skills to the students, how do we read and listen, topics regarding receptive skills, problems that appear when teaching these skills and how to carefully guide the students to comprehend authentic and non-authentic texts. Why we use our receptive skills! well. We use receptive skills in two cases: 1. for Purpose 2. for Entertainment The two reasons stated above - are equally effective when it comes to learn new language but they are different on the way they generate that knowledge. For e.g. when there is a deadline of an application and you have to read a book about it- you complete the task within a purpose. Whereas when you have free time and you go in a bookstore, purchase a book, and begin reading it for fun this is for entertaining. When it comes to reading and listening; it is important that we use not only our 'ears' and 'eyes' but rather understand the concept of what we read or listen with our minds. Because the brain/mind is the most important processing mechanism of learning new language. There are different specialist skills when we read a text or listen to a podcast. We use: a)Predictive skills b)Scanning-Specific information c)Skimming- General idea d)Detailed information f)Deduction from the context Problems; While in a class, sometimes sentence length, word length and unfamiliar words can be a big difficulty for the young learners of a language. Reading in this case is easier to maneuver with because the students might re read the textual content and understand it slowly. As with listening it is more difficult because listening requires faster skills, and focus, this is why sometimes students find it hard to do tasks related to listening. Shortly said; they do not have time to deduce the meaning. Fortunately there are many ways to approach these language pop up difficulties, which are: 1. Pre-teaching Vocabulary 2. Careful selection of texts Topics, and creating interest is also very important to help in these difficulties and also motivate the students to learn more.
