Bridge Creek, Oklahoma TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
I am continually surprised by what I learn from these units. I thought at the beginning of these lessons that I had a basic idea of what it meant to teach. I am being humbled because I really have no idea just how much goes into teaching. This unit showed me that everything I do can and will make a difference, from rearranging a classroom to the actual activities I use to help stimulate learning. The section on how to handle problems was reassuring because it affirmed what I have been using as techniques for problem solving all my life. I am currently working as a CNA in a Memory Care Unit, which allows me to redirect and guide people towards the correct solution of problems, but requires extra patience and provides me with opportunities for teaching moments. I keep learning that being a teacher means less talking time for myself and much more talking time for the students... which may seem like a “Duh” statement but I have always been someone who enjoys speaking... but speaking does not mean teaching. Setting an example, allowing students to figure out their own problems, and reaffirming what they know is teaching. I learned how to write on a board without losing the attention of my students, the different types of classroom settings I can use based on what I want to accomplish, the ways I can prevent behavior problems, and the ways I can respond to behavior problems. Everything this unit has taught me is not only applicable to teaching English, but I teach at my Church for Bible School- so I look forward to trying these techniques on Sunday. I look forward to continually being humbled and learning in more detail ways I can apply new techniques.
