Unit #12 reviewed how to teach productive skills, and the different methods employed to do so. Furthermore, the unit discussed the different areas in which accuracy or fluency are the primary focus and useful techniques for encouraging students to speak. I found the section on encouraging interaction all too familiar, as many of the tactics have been used by my prior language teachers to foster a productive speaking environment. As I have seen, speaking can often make students anxious, so finding creative ways to reduce the anxiety associated with speaking in class is an important tool for any language teacher. For me, the most important thing I learned was when I should provide correction. When I was in college, I remember the stress of being corrected in front of an entire class or the pain of being corrected when trying to give an answer. The experience of correction can cause students to either feel more confident or become more recluse; the primary difference is how the correction is handled by the teacher. This point is also true for writing exercises. In which case, I also learned penmanship is largely a matter of style and that it would mostly be inappropriate to correct students' handwriting unless it elicited an incorrect interpretation from the reader. My favorite part of the lesson was the example of a creative writing type lesson, as I have a concentration in creative writing and the skills I learned are something I've looked forward to utilizing in a classroom. I think creative writing is one of the best ways in which intermediate to advanced-level students can learn a language because creative writing often demonstrates the subtle nuances in a given language. Not only that, but I believe creative writing can allow for a greater stylistic use of language, which can be more rewarding than the formal writing prompt. Overall, this lesson is one of my favorites so far because, as a writer, I look forward to working with students in written forms to give them the benefit of my experiences.
