Unit 13 is on teaching pronunciation and phonology. This unit is a rather detailed explanation of the importance of sound in the English language. It is difficult to teach the various intonations and rhythms in a language to someone who has not grown up around the language in question. As a native speaker, I myself do not often think about the intonation, stress and articulation of the syllables I am producing everyday in my speech. This chapter made me think about the intricacies of the English language and the pronunciation needed to communicate efficiently in English. I was able to revise things like the phonemic alphabet, places of articulation and manner of articulation. Going through this chapter also gave me ideas on how I would conduct a class on pronunciation and phonetics and the techniques I could use for this aspect of language teaching.
