Unit #11 reviewed the importance of receptive skills and how to teach them to a class. The lesson discussed how different motives change the reasons for comprehension, which is usually based on reading and listening to help achieve a specific aim or goal (for a purpose), or reading and listening to information because we find it enjoyable (for entertainment). Additionally, the lesson detailed how individuals employ a variety of specialized skills such as predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailing information, and deducing from a context to achieve a certain level of understanding. Personally, I enjoyed this section because I was able to connect it to my studies during my minor in psychology, which taught me that our brains are capable of comprehending a great deal beyond what we consciously deduce. For example, not only does scanning and skimming pertain to reading, but it also pertains to how we interpret visual cues in everyday life. Some instances may include evaluating the flow of traffic, determining how to act in a social setting, or evaluating threats in a potentially dangerous situation. In other words, reading and listening are not always limited to a word-for-word comprehension but can be based on an individual's needs or desired goals. As a teacher, I would make great use of this knowledge to demonstrate the use of receptive skills by using situations that go beyond reading and listening to employ our brains to comprehend situations in everyday life. The rest of the unit reviewed other important points that I recognized in my prior teachers' teaching tactics such as choosing proper reading materials, creating interest, pre-teaching and reviewing content important to a lesson, and shaping tasks around their desired learner objectives. Perhaps the most informative was the section at the end of the unit that gave an example of how to teach receptive skills. I particularly liked the example of Elvis because it was something I could imagine teaching, as I've always been an Elvis admirer. Also, I found the sample practice exercises very helpful in that they provided a structure that I could utilize to create my own worksheets in the future.
