With the 'if' clause there is more flexibility with the English language. It can be used to talk about events that could happen, or play around with hypothetical situations to stimulate further conversations. It also helps, to explain consequences of a state or a main clause. To think of direct speech, that is just talking to another person pretty much, so it's the basics of English as we've been learning through this course. When converting it to a reported speech, anything present turns to its past version, i.e. present perfect turns into past perfect, etc. That is mostly all reported speech will have a backshifting to it. All the different changes might be much to teach right away, which is why it's best to take it slowly making sure the material is understood well.
