This unit covered the topic of how to manage a classroom effectively. The unit discussed the use of gestures, voice and eye contact, and methods of grouping students including pros and cons to each type of grouping scheme. Next, the unit covered classroom set up and teacher positioning and the rationale for each type of set up. Also, the unit covered the topics of writing on the board, providing individual attention, teacher talk time vs. student talk time, giving instructions and establishing rapport with students. Lastly, the unit covered problem behaviors in the classroom and discipline. I feel that I have learned that varying the classroom set up is determined by the goal of the activity and its purpose. Also, I feel I have a better understanding of use of verbal and non-verbal gestures for conveying information in the classroom as well as the impact non-verbal communication has on the student.
