This unit focused on the use of course books and lesson materials. The use of a course book should be flexible - the needs of the students should be put first, and course materials should be adapted to fit the needs of the specific group of students that the teacher is teaching. Authentic materials and created materials both have their own pros and cons, but authentic materials should not be used right off the bat when the target group is a beginner at the language. Created materials should be made in such a way to enhance the students' understanding of the language, and should not be rigid and inflexible to change when the needs of the students change.
In this unit, I learned about the usage of materials in a classroom. A lot of visual aids and supplementary material can enhance the lesson and make it more interesting and applicable, hence it is a good idea to keep the class lively by using a variety of methods. Different types of materials have a different function in the class, so it is important to keep in mind what to use depending on what you want the students to learn.
