The unit talks about how it is important to evaluate students’ level and progress. There are a number of ways to assess a students’ language level: tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. There are some tests that teacher can give students to do or students can do an examination. Placement tests are designed to enable teachers to place a new student into the correct according to their language ability. Diagnostic tests are basically similar in content to placements tests, and are sometimes more extensive. Progress tests should include a balance of all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. It should be used periodically to gauge what language has been remembered or has been forgotten. Practice tests should follow the format and the structure of the external examination that they are being given in preparation for. General external examinations have TOEFL, IETS, and TOEIC. The general English tests of Cambridge Assessment have KET, PET, PCE, CAE and CPE. It also has BEC and BULATS test.
