Unit 12 focuses on teaching the productive skills of speaking and writing. The unit begins with emphasizing the need for the teacher to create the need and desire of the student to want to communicate. Next, the lesson covered the productive skill of speaking. It discussed the difference between accuracy and fluency. Accuracy focuses on understanding and using the language correctly and in a controlled way, whereas fluency focuses on using language in a fluent and creative way. In accuracy-based activities, the teacher is in control of the language and in fluency-based activities the teacher creates the scenario, but the content is determined by the student. The lesson covered ways to encourage students to speak in the classroom and reasons students are reluctant to speak. A sample straight arrow lesson was provided for encouraging speaking skills and guidelines for creative/free speaking activities was presented. The second part of the lesson focused on writing skills. The need to teach students correct spelling and the difficulties the student learning English experiences when learning to spell was discussed. This was followed by a discussion of layout and punctuation. A brief discussion on having the student engage in creative writing activities was given, followed by a sample straight arrow lesson plan for teaching creative writing. Lastly, the use of games to work on communicative and or linguistics and could be used as warmer activity or in the activate phase of the lesson. Games could be used to improve spelling, punctuation, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary and a list of commonly used games was given. I feel the lesson helped to teach me the importance of incorporating both speaking and written activities into a lesson and that both are equally important for the student to learn. Also, it provided me with practical strategies for implementing writing into a lesson. Lastly, the lesson helped me to understand the need to make speaking and writing activities practical and to use activities that the students will find interesting and have value for them.
