This unit discussed the different methods for evaluating the student's level and progress as well as some tests the teacher may need to prepare his students to take. The three methods for evaluating a student's progress include tutorials, evaluation by the students and tests. Tutorials generally are done as a group and it reviews the work that has been completed, aim of the lessons, how well the students completed the tasks and any problems that were noted. Evaluation by the students is usually done by questionnaire or guided discussion and evaluates how the student feels about the learning experience. Also, it assesses if he believes he is receiving enough grammar, is the balance of skills appropriate, is the level of work too easy or hard. Tests are appropriate to assess the current level of the student. These can be formal or informal, written, oral or done through the use of games. Also, tests can be given weekly, monthly, at the end of the term or when a certain amount of the course book is completed. Tests can be give prior to starting the course to evaluate the student's current level and for group placement (placement tests), throughout the course (progress tests), achievement tests (given by the school at the end of the course) and external examinations (proficiency tests). The last section of the lesson discussed the various external examinations that the student my need to take. These include TOEFL, IETS, TOEIC and Cambridge Assessment tests. This lesson taught me the need for placement tests in order to discover the level of the student and to place him in the correct class when beginning his language studies. Also, I learned the different types of progress tests that the teacher can administer as well as the various external tests that many students.
