In this unit, we learned about the four basic skills in languages. The first two are receptive skills: reading and listening. The other two are productive skills: writing and speaking. In this unit the focus was on the receptive skills, reading and listening. The two main reasons for why we read and listen are for "a purpose." We will read or listen to achieve a certain goal or aim. We can also read or listen for entertainment. The unit also explained how we read and listen. We use different skills such as predictive skills, scanning, skimming, looking for detailed information and lastly deduction from context. The unit explained that we must select topics for texts and/or dialogues that interest the students, having a variety, as so to motivate them in their learning.
