Unit 19 discussed special groups which includes beginners, teaching individual students, teaching children, teaching Business English and English for specific purposes and teaching monolingual and multilingual classes. The section on beginners defined 5 different types of beginners (absolute, false, adult, young and beginner without Roman alphabet). The unit discussed teaching methodology, possible problems the teacher may encounter teaching beginner students and ways to motive and nurture learning English as a foreign language. Next, the lesson discussed the advantages and disadvantages to teaching individual students, suggestions for teaching individual students and suitable 1-1 activities when working with individuals as well as the importance of giving homework assignments to the student. Next, the lessons discussed teaching children: the role of the parent during early formative years, child curiosity and the need for frequent activity changes to maintain motivation. Then, the lesson focused on dos and don'ts for teaching children and classroom discipline and management. The lesson then focused on teaching Business English and English for specific purposes. It discussed the type of client one may teach, their motivation and the need to teach to their specific needs. The lesson discussed the challenges the teacher may face when teaching in the group setting and the need for understanding group dynamics. Next, the lesson discussed needs analysis and planning the course as well as providing a sample needs analysis questionnaire. Lastly, the unit discussed teaching multilingual classes and monolingual classes; their advantages and disadvantages. Also, the lesson discussed the avoidance of using the student's native tongue in the classroom. This lesson taught me that different strategies, materials and resources need to be employed depending on the type of student the teacher is teaching. However, the same basic teaching method should be employed (the use of the ESA method). One major takeaway for this lesson was the teacher's behavior and attitude may be the single most important factor in a classroom and have an effect on discipline. Also, when teaching Business English or English for specific purposes what the client or company wants may be different than what they need. Furthermore, I learned that the use of authentic material/resources are invaluable when teaching Business English or English for specific purposes. Lastly, the lesson reminded me to avoid using the student's mother tongue in the classroom as a teacher and for the students to communicate only in English as much as possible.
