This unit covered strategies for teaching the three components of a new language. These components include vocabulary, grammar and language functions. The unit provided rationale for selecting the information to be taught whether the lesson focuses on vocabulary, grammar or language functions. Next, the unit covered what the student needs to know about each component being taught and then a sample technique for teaching each component was provided. I learned that students need to be introduced to a new language in a balanced manner and that more often than not, only one component of the new language will be focused on during any given lesson. Lastly, I learned that the ESA method can be modified for each component. For example, a straight arrow ESA lesson structure may be best suited for teaching vocabulary where as a boomerang approach may be best suited for teaching grammar and the patchwork ESA structure may be best used when teaching language function.
