One of the most complicated areas of the English language is the future tenses because it has so many different tenses and is easily to be confused. There are eight future tenses: simple, continuous, perfect, perfect continuous, be going to + infinitive, present simple and present continuous. The usages of the future simple are facts, certainties, promises, predictions, assumptions/speculations, spontaneous decisions and threats. It is easily confused with ‘be going to + infinitive’ which is used for actions with intentions, predictions based on present evidence, plans (decisions made before speaking). The future continuous is used for an action which will continue around a specific point of time in the future, predict the present, polite enquiries referring to other people’s plan and fixed or decided future events without personal intentions to change their plans. Future perfect and future perfect continuous are easily to be confused. Future perfect is used for the completion of action by a certain time in the future, while future perfect continuous’s usage is about how long something will have continued for by a certain time. Present simple is also used in future tense to suggest a more formal situation and impersonal tone, and for timetables and schedules. We use present continuous for definite arrangements, and decisions and plans without a time frame.
