Unit 4 introduces the tense system of the English language. The tense system is the area that equips any language with the capacity to create sentences that refer to different time frames. Given the complexity of the subject of time as perceived and construed by the human mind, it is only natural that linguists and other scholars are still debating about the nature of tense systems. Be that as it may, for an EFL teacher should consider that there are three different times in English: - past, - present, - future. Each to these times has four aspects: - simple, - continuous, - perfect, - perfect continuous. Therefore, there are 3 X 4 = 12 different tenses in English. In this course, for each tense and other grammar points, four different areas will be presented: - Form: affirmative, negative and question forms. - Usages: How and under what circumstances the tense or grammar point is used. - Typical student errors. - Activate stage teaching ideas. Unit 4 presents the four present tenses and provides grammatical construction and fundamental rules for each corresponding form. It also gives examples of common usages, of typical errors, and of activate stage teaching ideas. In addition, it also describes some "quirks" specific to the present tenses, such as contracted forms and irregular verbs. All this information is presented in a very concise and visually organized format that makes Unit 4 a very practical reference document that might be used even in a classroom context.
