This was a very interesting and helpful unit for me. As a language learner, I have always taken course materials for granted, so it was useful for me to see the complexity that goes into the materials used in a language course, specifically an English language course. The unit first discussed the difference between authentic and created materials. Authentic materials are ones that an English speaker would encounter in everyday life. While they may be more up to date and have more interesting topics for students, they are not graded to language level and can present some issues. Created materials, however, may be less interesting or up to date but they can be tailored exactly to the needs of the students. Next this unit discussed course books, the pros and cons of using them, and how an English teacher can use them to maximum benefit in the classroom.
