This unit was somewhat shorter than previous units, and covers the basics of student evaluation. It is necessary for the teacher to evaluate students so that their language level, strengths and weaknesses, and individual progress can be measured and future lessons can be planned accordingly. It is also helpful to the student if the teacher is giving continuous feedback in order to help them assess their own progress. Occasional feedback from the students on the course itself can also be useful in helping teachers evaluate their lesson plans and plan better for future classes based on student's feedback and needs. There are various types of evaluation that teachers can carry out to evaluate students, and the tests discussed in most detail this unit were placement tests to help determine a student's level and which class or group they should be placed in, diagnostic tests, which are usually given at the beginning of a course to assess where each student is and what needs to be worked on, progress tests, which can be given regularly to assess what information has been retained and what language points still need work, and practice tests to help students prepare for external examinations. This chapter also mentions the fact that some teachers argue against testing at all, saying that it is really a test of memory and not a test of knowledge. However, it is likely that some form of evaluation will be required in whatever institution a teacher is working in. Lastly, this unit covered a few of the well-known and reputable external examinations for English language learners.
