It was very helpful in this unit to move away from the theory of teaching and see two examples of a real-life ESL lesson. In the first lesson it was very clear that the teacher was far less interested in helping the students succeed, and the condescending attitude that he brought to the class clearly made the students feel confused and intimidated, resulting in very low participation and probably not achieving the learner objectives. In the second lesson, however, the teacher is much more positive and engaging, and seems truly invested in helping the students to understand. In turn, the students were more willing to participate and in the end got much more out of the lesson than they had the first. In the second lesson the teacher also is more conscious about checking in with the students either to help them, to make sure they understand what is going on, or to engage and elicit responses from them.
