In this chapter I learned about place of articulation, manner of articulation, the phonemic symbols, intonations and stresses, and connection of speech. I learned about how the anatomy of the speech organs play apart in determining the sounds of a language. Dental is one part of Place of Articulation, this is where the tongue is placed between the teeth in order to make the “th” sound. Another part of pronunciation is Manner of Articulation. An example of this is Plosive, this is a way in which the speech organs move in order to form the sound k. This is done by an explosion of air to form sounds like k and g. The Phonemic Chart is a great tool to clear up confusion when it comes to pronunciation in the English languge. English can be very confusing for students since many words that use the same patterns of spelling have different speech sounds. For example “go” and “to” both have o’s yet they are pronounced differently. Intonations is a variation of pitch and volume through out an entire sentence to carry a message. Stress is where one word is stressed instead of the whole sentence. Both intonation and stress is used to emphasize a mood and meaning according to the situation that the speaker is in. Connected speech is a convenient way for native speakers to communicate even though its grammar is not sound. An example of linking connected speak is “I wanna go” instead of the written way “I want to go”.
