This unit was helpful in that it provided guidelines as to how I may best communicate to students about what comprises a part of speech as used in English. Most importantly, the unit clearly communicated the role that various parts of speech play in clarifying information being conveyed. For example, I learned that prepositions establish the specifics of the relationship between words and phrases in a particular sentence. I also learned other useful rules, including how to explain the rules of multiple adverb placement, i.e., place, manner, and time. The unit also offered useful information with respect to how I may best explain to a student where a single adverb goes in a sentence, i.e., after an intransitive verb and after the object of a transitive verb. These are just examples of all that I learned by carefully reading and then studying this unit. The gist is that it gave me tools to specify a great deal that I intuitively know about the English language. This will support me in teaching others and supporting them in speaking and writing English with precision and mastery.
