In this chapter I learned about modals, passive voice and phrasal verbs. Modals are used to denote the mood of the main verb. Some major uses are to indicate ability, advice, and obligation. For example, the modal auxiliary verb “should” can be used to give advice, such as “You should go on a diet.” The passive voice focuses less on the agent than the active voice. Here is an example of a sentence in the active voice “I will water the garden tomorrow”. Instead, the passive voice focuses less on the agent “The garden will be watered tomorrow”. In the passive voice the tense always remains the same and it is indicated by the auxiliary verb. Phrasal verb consist of one or two particles and when used together they take on a different meaning then that of the original verb. There are three types of phrasal verbs. One example of the type 1 is “He didn’t turn up.”
