I have learnt some that modal auxiliary verbs can be used to express some ideas like; obligation, possibility, permission, ability, advice. Modal verbs don't change in form according to person. Modal verbs are also used to express differing degrees of formality. The 'modals' are: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, have to, have got to, need to, needn't and ought to. They are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb. May is used for polite request and formal permission. Need to is used for need or necessity. Have to is used for necessity or obligation. Can is used for informal permission. Could is used for past ability, suggestion and improbability. Would is used for repeated past actions and preference.
