Unit 18 covered some additional grammar material that supplements earlier lessons. Modal auxiliary verbs are used to add meaning such as uncertainty or formality to a verb. The passive voice changes the focus of a sentence from the subject or agent of an action to the object of the sentence. This is used when it is not important or known who exactly performed an action. Independent and dependent clauses were reviewed in this unit, including the difference between defining and non-defining relative clauses. Three types of phrasal verbs were introduced as well.
