Both students and teachers have a list of attributes to define them and their roles in the learning process. The teacher plays a number of roles to be effective such as controlling the class, monitoring student participation to be inclusive and to be able to assess a student and give feedback that will be helpful and motivate and encourage the student in the learning process. Teachers can also be tutors, participate in class activity but most of all as the only source a student has with english is in the class and teachers must be a model with grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary and be the authority in the learners eyes. A good teacher is kind, motivating, and must sometime be entertaining to promote to build a good rapport with students. A teacher must be knowledgeable about the subject ., see a students weaknesses and strengths to give help where needed and ESL requires that a teacher has to be able to correct without offense. Learners fall into different age groups with each group having its' own dynamics. There are pre-schoolers that are taught through pictures, games, and songs, the 8-12 years old that are most receptive to sound, and the usually unmotivated high school student, and finally the adult that is usually participating with specific goals in mind. For all of these there are different levels of abilities used for grading and assessment. These levels are beginners, elementary, low-intermediate, intermediate, upper immediate and advance. Each level is progressive and depends on student efficiency. All of this can more simply be said that a good teacher and a good student work together with inclusion, patience, care, and respecting the needs of each other. They learn together one from the other, exchange customs and ideas, and show commitment to the process.
