When we teach language, we need to use books and other materials. After all, one of the receptive skills is reading, so having a course book or other materials can aid students in improving their reading ability and absorbing new information, such as vocabulary. Additionally, offering video tape recordings in addition to the teacher's voice during class, worksheets and other such materials, gives students a variety of methods for practicing and studying and will make the class more interesting and engaging. The choice of whether or not to have a main course book, and if so, which one, is a complex issue. There are advantages and disadvantages to using a course book. For example, it provides a structured syllabus but if the teacher relies on it too much, he or she may end up with lessons that are monotonous and uninspired. The choice of whether or not to use authentic materials or created materials and when, is also complex. Authentic materials are real materials by native speakers, not created for language learners, hence they tend to be more stimulating but also more difficult, usually not appropriate for a beginner's class. Created materials, however, are designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book and can be graded to the level of the student. Created materials include things such as cross-words and flashcards. They are helpful for beginner students. I feel that after reading this unit, I am better equipped to use course books effectively because one of the pages in this unit gives a list of bullet points regarding the best use of course books and gives explanations for these bullet points. For example, this list warns us against viewing the course book as a solution to everything and basing all of our lessons around it. This unit emphasizes the importance of carefully creating and choosing materials as a teacher.
