Teachers can use evaluation at the start of the course, periodically during the course and at the end of the course for different reasons. An exam at the start of the course will allow the teacher to place the student in the corresponding level of English class, as well as prepare relevant future work in the class. A periodic test will give feedback to the students and help teachers as to how much information was learned or retained, as well as the general progress of the student and if the coursework was relevant. An exam may be given at the end of a class for purposes of reviewing and in preparation for an external exam. The important thing in evaluating a student, however, is consistency: a continual assessment of the student's English learning is the best way to monitor progress of each student, and also to give the teacher feedback for constructing each lesson according to the student's abilities and needs.
