Examinations are useful for objectively identifying the strengths and weaknesses of individual students. However, exams can also be deceptive, as it is hard to structure them to test for fluency, rather than memorization. They are a crucial, but limited, tool. Teachers should certainly take examination results seriously, but rapport with the students may serve a teacher better in personally evaluating a student's progress.
