Like the present tense, the past tense takes the forms of: 'simple', 'past continuous', 'past perfect' and 'past perfect continuous'. The past simple adds (ed) to the base form of the verb to describe actions that were completed at a definite time in the past. Most common verbs are irregular in this form. The past continuous adds the words "was/were" before the verb and "ing" to the end of the verb. This tense is used when an action began before a time reference and probably continued after, or to describe interrupted past actions, descriptions or gradual developments. The past perfect consists of the word 'had' after the subject and before the past participle. This tense is used to represent actions that occurred before other actions in the past, often used with the words "after" or "when". The past perfect continuous consists of the subject + the word 'had" + the word "been" followed by the verb with "ing" at the end. This tense is used to talk about longer actions or situations in the past that had been going on continuously up until the past moment that is currently being mentioned.
