I think that this was a useful unit and I learned about the role of authentic and non-authentic course materials. I think that a textbook, especially for a new teacher, can help provide a general structure for the class and help students see a clear path for each unit. Even if the textbook is used, I think that authentic and created materials still both have important places in the classroom and can help make the lesson more interesting and engaging. Authentic materials, especially in larger classes, open a number of possibility options to help practice spoken fluency, oral comprehension, and reading/writing practice based on interesting and relevant topics that would otherwise likely be absent from a textbook. I also found all the examples helpful.
