The unit was short but good. I like the analytical approach that's laid out. Communication at any given time is either receptive or productive depending on whether you're receiving or producing. It's simple enough but important to remember how it's categorized. The unit covers some good stuff by reminding the reader of one's motive when reading and listening. Motives change. One conversation may be for a purpose, like learning a lesson, while another is for pleasure, like listening to a song. And I like how the lesson defines little tactics we use everyday without hardly recognizing it. We use predictive skills, scanning, skimming, etc. These are things we must understand as teachers. These skills should be developed in the students. I can see how it's important to tackle difficult vocabulary, however, one must "hold on loosely" and not overdo it with the students and possibly loose their interest before a given activity. A good teacher must be tactful with choosing topics that are fun and relevant, creating interest in what is being learned, and giving tasks that are neither a mountain or a mole hill for the students.
