This unit explored the concept of examining and assessing the language skills of individual students. Students can be assessed through teacher-led tutorials, through student examination or through testing. Placement tests are given prior to a student's entrance into a course and determine what class the student should be placed in depending on their existent knowledge of the language. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests because they are given at the beginning of a course, but help teachers determine the direction of the class and what areas of the language need to be included in the lesson plans. Progress tests are given periodically throughout the course and help the teacher keep track of what the students are learning and retaining. Practice tests are used to help students prepare for some form of external examination such as TOEFL or TOIC.
