This unit introduces various equipment and teaching aids used in the classroom. We learn about the common equipment and resources we may find in a classroom, such as OHP (overhead projector), cassette tapes, course books, and more. We learn about some of the major functions of these tools and resources and about the possible difficulties we may encounter when using them. For example, an OHP may be difficult to set up and use effectively and technology in general may fail, so when using technological equipment, it is important and necessary to have a backup plan. Traditionally, cassette tapes were very important for listening exercises during an ESL class and they are still useful and commonly used, however, DVDs and internet sources, such as youtube, may also serve a similar role. Ultimately, there are many materials for ESL teachers to make use of and it is up to our discretion to decide when and how to use certain materials. Therefore, this unit proves useful in its in-depth examination of various tools and their roles, serving as a good guide for new ESL teachers.
