This unit deals with teaching vocabulary, grammar and language functions through the ESA method. After a brief introduction, the unit examines teaching new vocabulary by going over important issues in selecting vocabulary, techniques for vocabulary teaching, and finally showing the pattern for a typical ESA vocabulary lesson (usually straight arrow or boomerang). The unit then examines the teaching of grammatical structures by mentioning what the students need to be taught, the techniques used for presenting the lesson, ending with the typical ESA grammar lesson pattern (with an example of the patchwork grammar lesson). The unit then examines the teaching of language functions, explaining what language functions are, stating that here the stress is in the activation of the language, and that it will probably require a boomerang or patchwork pattern. The unit ends by giving an example of a typical ESA function lesson using a boomerang pattern.
