Unit 20 - Troubleshooting. Common problems and solutions. This lesson covers the most common problems that teachers face or can encounter in the classroom and suggests ways of dealing with them. Classes, in general, fall into two categories: new group and existing group. During the first lesson, the experienced teacher will not use any course books, but rather establish rapport between the students (in case of a new group) and between the teacher and the class. The teacher must find out as much as he or she can about the students, about the students' needs and aspirations with English. The teacher must also find out the english level of each individual class member. The lesson presents, therefore, activities that the teacher can use for these purposes. The lesson continues then with the presentation of warmers, which are activities used to get the students in the mood for English. One of the biggest problems that teachers face when teaching groups is that the members, the students are at varying levels of English. The lesson presents ways so that the teacher can deal with this problem. If a teacher is faced with a large class to teach, then he or she can employ a number of techniques to create successful lessons, such as: use of worksheets, pair/group work, clarity, choral repetition, appointing group leaders. Regarding the use of native language by the students, this can be problematic. In such a case, the teacher must make sure that the lessons are at an appropiate level and the students have the necessary language to cope. The teacher must give clear explanations to all class members. The teacher must encourage the use of English where appropiate. In case of reluctant students, the lesson provides useful ideas to get the students practising in a safe environment, with the support of other fellow students, before coming out in front of the class for an open discussion. Regarding difficulties with listening texts, the teacher should work with the students in order to improve their listening skills. I have learnt in this lesson that there are two types or two categories of classes or groups: new groups and existing groups and that there are differences between them. I have learnt that during the first lesson I should not use the course book, but establish a rapport between the students (if the group is new) and between me, as a teacher, and the students. I have also learnt that in the first class I must find out about my students's needs and aspirations with English. I must also find out the level of English that each student has and based on this, knowing the problems they have, I can plan my future lessons and build the areas of difficulty into the course syllabus.
