I learned the convenience of having a course book to follow as a guideline, but I also learned that it is important to supplement it with authentic materials and activities the teacher deems appropriate for the class. After taking TEFL, ideally of course every new teacher would love to have a syllabus that they created completely on their own that fits their students perfectly, but obviously that it not always the best option for a new teacher. Course books have a tried and tested syllabus that works for most students at a certain level, and is very helpful for a new teacher who has very little or no experience. The students definitely benefit from interesting games and activities that are tailored to their interests and needs, but without a general guideline from a course book it might be difficult for the teacher to moves the course along efficiently.
