I can see how formal assessments can be useful in gauging the level at which the students are at, particularly when used at the beginning of a course. This way, the teacher can see what level each student is at and can modify course work and lesson plans according to the level of each separate class period. However, from my experience, I am not a big fan of standardized formal tests. I don't think they can always be used to truly test the level a child is at, especially if it is a multiple choice test. This is why most of the tests I would give to my classes were essay or short-answer questions as opposed to multiple choice. This way, the students weren't simply memorizing skills but they had to know the reasoning and explanation behind a certain answer.
