Unit 18 discusses modals, phrasal verbs and the passive voice. A modal auxiliary verb is a type of verb that is used to indicate modality of something. In this case that is: likelihood, ability, permission and obligation. Examples can include the verbs can/could, may/might, must, will/would and shall/should. Next, the passive voice was discusses. In english there are two voices, passive and active. Passive is one of the two “voices” of verbs that is used in speaking. A verb is in the passive voice when the subject of the sentence is acted on by the verb. For example, in “The ball was thrown by the pitcher,” the ball (the subject) receives the action of the verb, and was thrown is in the passive voice. Finally, Phrasal verbs are phrases consisting of a verb and another element, typically either an adverb, as in break down, or a preposition.
