A teacher should always modify material in order to fit the needs of their students. While textbooks can be helpful in supplementing lessons and providing extra practice for certain lessons, they shouldn't be the sole source a teacher uses in order to teach. In addition, a teacher should always try to use material that will be of interest to the students. One year, I had a class of majority soccer boys, and a few other athletes mixed in. While we would cover the same basic lesson in that class, I would make sure to use sports-related material in order to keep them interested. So if we were going over author's purpose and tone, I would use a sports article for this class. This helped them stay interested in what we were learning instead of being disruptive because they didn't care.
