When it comes to teaching a new language, there are three aspects that need to be covered: teaching new vocabulary, teaching grammar and teaching language functions. Sometimes, especially with students at advanced language levels, lesson may involve all three components - new vocabulary, new grammar and new language functions. However, most commonly, a lesson will focus on one area specifically. There are various methods and techniques that would be appropriate and adequate to be used when dealing with teaching vocabulary, grammar or functions. Whatever the language area may be, in order for the student to successfully learn new language, four things need to happen: the student first needs to be exposed to new language, secondly he/she must understand what it means, thirdly the student must understand how those language units are constructed and finally the last stage is when the student is able to produce the language himself/herself and able to communicate successfully using it.
