In this unit, I learned about receptive skills, reading and listening, which are part of the four basic skills in any language. Productive skills would be speaking and writing. I understood all are equally important and wherever possible we should try to incorporate all of them into our lessons if we want to have a balanced approach. When we read and listen, we’re usually doing so for two reasons, one for a purpose and the other for fun. How we read and listen has to do with our mind and how we comprehend, not just the action of the eyes and ears. This unit showed me that readers and listeners make use of a number of specialist skills when reading or listening, and their understanding of the context will depend on their expertise in predictive skills, specific information-scanning, general idea -skimming, detailed information, and deduction from context. I also understood that the teaching and learning of respective skills presents a problem mainly in connection with language. This unit shows how to address these problems, as well as how to teach it using the ESA method.
